Miya Miya Film Club Presents: Talking About Trees
Event description
Miya Miya translates in Arabic to the 100 emoji, perfect, fantastic, 100/100. Miya Miya Film Club aims to showcase and provide a platform to tell SWANA stories on unceded Gadigal and Wangal land.
After the success of our launch event Gadigal to Gaza we're excited to bring you a monthly event. Miya Miya Film Club Presents will be a place where you can have an ahweh (Lebanese coffee) or tea, play some tawla (backgammon), socialise with your community, and watch a film together from the SWANA region.
The first film in our 2025 program is: الحديث عن الأشجار (Talking About Trees, Sudan, 2019) directed by Suhaib Gasmelbari.
Filmed in secret due to state suppression, four Sudanese filmmakers and members of the Sudanese Film Club founded in 1989 attempt to revive cinema in their country. What unfolds is a poetic, kind, heart-warming, and heart-wrenching portrait of male friendship, a sharedlove of cinema, and resistance in the face of perpetual adversity.
Miya Miya prides itself on being a hub of safety, inclusivity, and community. Our events are a safe and inclusive space for all peoples, including our SWANA, First Nations, Black, POC, Jewish, and LGBTQIASB+ friends, and we have zero tolerance for harassment of any kind.
No one turned away for lack of funds. Please contact the @miyamiyafilmclub instagram page for ticketing enquiries.
Miya Miya Film Club meets on unceded Gadigal and Wangal land of the Eora Nation. Miya Miya Film Club acknowledges the Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia and acknowledges their continuing connection to land, waters, and community. Miya Miya Film Club pays its respects to the people, the cultures, and the Elders past and present and emerging. Always was, always will be. Miya Miya Film Club also acknowledges the people of Palestine and their rights for self-determination. We acknowledge the devastation and mass atrocities continuing in Gaza and hope that through greater awareness and collective action, we can work towards a world free from genocide, violence, and injustice. Always was, always will be.
