What is Laser Run?
Simply, Laser Run combines shooting and running in a continuous format. Depending on the age group, athletes run a lap or run into the shooting range where they are required to hit 5 bullseyes, on an electronic target, or 50 seconds elapses as they try. Then run, shoot, repeat (depending on age) and finish with a run lap.
Why try Laser Run?
Laser Run is a fun sport of strategy and skill to run fast then compose yourself to shoot. It also is a great test of aerobic and anaerobic fitness and add some variety to your running training.
Within the Laser Run the shooting takes place with a completely safe and environmentally friendly laser pistol, fired at a target from 10m or 5m, depending on age.
Laser Run is the final phase of a Modern Pentathlon (MP) competition and as an individual competition, it is one of the pathway sports of MP and keenly contested across the world.
Calculating age for events:
The age will be counted by subtracting the year of birth from the year of competition.
Months & days are not taken into account.
i.e. birth year 2010. 2024 – 2010 = 14 Competition Category – Under 15

How does a laser run work?
1. Start off as a pack, lined up in number order
2. Run directly to your shooting bay for most age groups, for U19-Senior, run a 600m lap then go to your shooting bay.
3. Shoot until all lights on your target start flashing (either after you get 5hits or 50seconds). Make sure you touch the table as you reload after each shot!
4. Run! As soon as all 5 lights flash, go run a lap, then come back to your shooting bay.
5. Number of laps is shown in the table below, after your final lap, you cross the finish and celebrate!
What to wear for laser run?
State, Club or hub uniform encouraged. National uniforms should not be worn for competition.
One piece or two piece allowed. The upper body must be covered, competitors may not run stripped to the waist. Running singlets may be worn.
Athletic shoes must be worn. The surface for this Laser Run is grass and spikes can be worn for the Laser Run Championship competition only.
Use of headphones, iPods, mobile phones etc are not permitted in the competition.
What is Triathle?
Triathle adds the swimming in a continuous format with the Laser Run, shoot-swim-run. Triathle is a great competition for athletes transitioning from other sports and adds a change from the ‘swim race’ of MP. Can also be run as a non-continuous event though often run in open water - beach & lakes.
