Monitoring Wildlife in Our Suburbs
Event description
Discover the wildlife in your neighbourhood and garden!
We share our gardens, parks and reserves with thousands of wild neighbours - from insects, to frogs, lizards, birds and more! In this 2-hour session, ReWild Perth will share some of the basics to monitor the wonderful wildlife in our suburbs.
You will be joining the members of the Hilton Precincts Garden, Verges and Trees Committee who will be using this training to monitor wildlife in nearby Griffiths Park to measure the success of the 'Community Action – Caring for Carnaby Cockatoos' project, supported by Perth NRM and the City of Fremantle and funded by WIRES. The project will see 2000 seedlings planted in the park this June 2025 (keep an eye out for dates so you can join in!), and a large watering trough 'cockitrough' installed providing much need foraging and water resources for local wildlife including the threatened Black Cockatoo's who visit the park and have an important roost nearby.
You will be learning:
- How to install a fauna monitoring camera: photos triggered by the movement of wildlife allow us to understand who visits a structure, park or garden. Residents around the park will be offered to borrow a limited number of cameras to monitor gardens around the park.
- Stationary bird surveys and structure monitoring: Survey techniques to understand who and how many birds and other wildlife use gardens, bird baths, ponds or 'Cockitroughs'.
- How to join ongoing citizen science projects: learn about projects in Perth including - Birdata, Backyard Bird Count, Frog ID,
Great Cocky Count, iNaturalist, and Turtle Trackers. Learn how to use some of the phone apps to start adding your data!
This event is free and includes light refreshments.
