Event description

[UPDATE: This event is now being held at the Institute of Modern Art at the Judith Wright Arts Centre, Fortitude Valley.]

Otomo Yoshihide is one of Japan’s musical visionaries. His ground-breaking early work with the lauded group Ground Zero set the stage for a life in music that has encompassed film composition, free jazz, noise, and restless experimentation. He holds an utterly unique position in the contemporary Japanese music landscape. His work is as iconic as it is profound.

He is joined by fellow experimentalist Tomomi Adachi, whose dynamic work operates between experimental sound, instrument creation, and performance-based methodologies, sitting at the fringes of contemporary practice.

Uminari Trio are Morishige Yasumune (bass, cello), Cal Lyall (guitar, banjo), and James Hulllick (prepared piano, electronics). Everything is improvised. ‘This is music ecstasy with a meditative backbone: an ocean rising up after a still night over moonlit waters.’
