Why do we keep wanting monsters?

With Wicker bringing yet another monster-lover romance to theaters this fall and spooky season in full swing, it seems like a particularly good time to ask why humans are so fascinated by falling in love with, fucking, fearing, becoming, and being desired by monsters.

Monsters have never just been creatures. We create monsters out of parts of humanity and the people, bodies, desires, and behaviors a culture decides do not quite belong.

In this class, we’ll explore monster theory through the lens of kink, sexuality, and monstrous desire. We’ll look at what monsters reveal about the cultures that create them, why particular kinds of monsters become erotic or sexualized, how monstrosity changes the way we experience bodies and power, and what happens when we become the monster.

We’ll dig into otherness, abjection, predator and prey dynamics, monstrous bodies, taboo desire, human/nonhuman boundaries, and the strange relationship between fear and attraction. We’ll also examine how gender, sexuality, disability, race, beauty, morality, and social expectations influence who gets treated as monstrous, who gets to desire the monstrous, and whose desires are treated as monstrous themselves.

From centuries-old creatures to the new, monsters give us a way to play with bodies, desires, relationships, and possibilities that ordinary humanity doesn't always leave room for.

Whether you want to fuck monsters, play one, become one, submit to one, hunt one, worship one, or simply understand why the creature in the dark can be so damn compelling, come spend some time with the theory behind our monsters and what our monsters might be telling us about ourselves.

✦ About the Educator ✦

Ember Solaris (they/she) is a Sadistic D-type leaning switch and social scientist who infuses her passion for research into every class she presents. A professional information sponge and infodumper, Ember's classes combine depth, passion, ferocity, and ethical complexity.

Ember collaborates with their co-organizer Ms_Kitten_ to run the Let it Reign and Reign of Blood platforms to provide quality, accessible kink education across experience levels, interests, and intensity preferences. Ember has taught across the country and beyond and regularly presents online. A disabled, queer, genderqueer nerd, they live in the gray spaces and hope to meet you there.
