Event description

Project Overview
Moorabool Catchment Landcare Group (MCLG) have been successful in a joint grant application with Seeding Victoria to the Moorabool Shire’s Community Grant Program. This project is called the Moorabool Seed Pod

This project continues the work over the last twelve months that has been done by MCLG which includes purchasing seed collection equipment, obtaining seed collection licenses from DEECA, and a series of educational workshops delivered by Seeding Victoria.

The goal of the project is to train interested Landcare members on how to collect, clean and store native seed. This seed will be used in our own revegetation projects and sold on consignment through Seeding Victoria, generating more funds for Landcare activities and contributing to restoration activities all across the state.

MCLG ran two workshops last year with Seeding Victoria, those who attended the workshops now meet once a month to collect native seed throughout the catchment for restoration programs. At the conclusion of the workshop participants will be invited to participate in seed collection activities with the group.

Having supply of local provenance native seed (seed from our region) is an ongoing challenge for every environmental rehabilitation project. This project will engage and upskill the community to address this issue. This project will increase the amount of native seed collected in our region, allowing increased environmental restoration to occur. Positively impacting wildlife and ecosystems throughout the catchment and working with our community along the way.

This Workshop
This workshop will be delivered by Seeding Victoria's Manager Dan Frost. Dan has an incredible amount of knowledge on native seed, which he will pass on during this workshop.

The workshop will build on the lessons covered in our first workshop held on Aug 9th, 2025. Participants will learn about seed cleaning and processing and more practical seed collection knowledge not covered in the first workshop.

This workshop will take place at Seeding Victoria's Creswick Seedbank (Sawpit Road, Creswick), located in the stunning Creswick Regional Park. We will tour the seedbank getting to see the seed processing equipment, seed production areas, and seed storage facilities.

Participants will leave the workshop being able to confidently collect native seed, perfect timing coming into the spring/summer collecting season.

Places are limited to 20 spots so register now!

How to get there
The Creswick Seedbank is located at the Parks Victoria Depot on Sawpit Road, Creswick. Turn off the Midland Highway onto Sawpit Road, 600m up the road you will find the fenced depot with a carpark inside. Also close by is the La Gerche Walking Trail, a short easy walk showcasing the Creswick Regional Park and the history of Forestry in Creswick, you may want to arrive early or visit the trail after the workshop.

What to bring
Water bottle, warm and weatherproof clothes (we will be outside for some of the workshop), workbook (if you wish to take notes), reusable cup, and snacks.
Lunch and a light morning tea will be provided. Please get in touch if you have any dietary requirements.

Intended Audience
This event is intended to create a group of interested seed collectors within the Moorabool region. We will be preferencing those who attended our first workshop on Aug 9th, 2025, but if you were unable to attend the first workshop, this workshop will still be of value, and you will take a lot away from it.
If you do not live in the Moorabool region or are not a member of MCLG or a member of a Landcare group within the Moorabool Landcare Network, please get in touch prior to registering.

This project is supported from funding from the Moorabool Shire Council’s Community Grants Program.
