MoPed presents: Julia Doak from Bedpost
Event description
Hear about:
Join MoPed & Julia Doak, as she shares her journey from the early days of her career to becoming the national franchisor for Bedpost. She'll dive into the inner workings of the Bedpost franchise, offering insights on balancing the needs of both franchisees and in-store customers. Julia will also explore how marketing has changed over the years, revealing what strategies have succeeded, which ones fell short, and the story behind the iconic "You can sleep on it" jingle.
About Julia Doak:
At 17, she snuck into Exchequers Night Club in Wellington, where she met a guy who would set her on a path of bold choices. Leaving school to get a job, she walked into BNZ Lower Hutt in her school uniform, landed a position on the spot, and never looked back.
Her career soon took her to the foreign exchange dealing room during Desert Storm, where she traded BNZ’s US Dollar portfolio as one of only four women among 70 men. The high-pressure world of forex taught her the value of making quick, informed decisions.
Fast forward to 1995, after a conversation with Bedpost’s Robert Fowler, she bought her first Bedpost franchise just ten days later. Over the next decade, she navigated the ups and downs of retail, eventually selling two franchises and becoming Bedpost NZ’s marketing manager. By 2014, she helped broker the management buyout of the company.
Her story is one of gutsy moves and quick thinking. Traits that have taken her from a
teenager sneaking into nightclubs to a successful business leader.
