Amy Remeikis will join a panel of welfare and housing rights advocates to share insights on what's in the budget – the things that made the headlines and the important measures that didn't.

The government has tweaked some tax rules, but they're letting gas companies keep war profits while people go homeless and hungry on Centrelink payments that leave us unable to afford the basics. We'll talk about what's missing, what spending on income control and welfare compliance means, and what's next.

We encourage everyone who is interested in reducing poverty and inequality to join us, including people on low incomes, unionists, community sector workers and all who support us. The event is open to all but we do not tolerate racism, transphobia or any other form of discrimination. If you can comfortably afford to do so, we would welcome a solidarity donation (available on ticket page) to help cover the cost of this and future events.

The panel will discuss:

• The politics behind the 2026 federal budget, the media's role and what the economic outlook means for us all

• How CGT and negative gearing changes will and won't change things, and what is needed to address the housing crisis

• Changes to the NDIS

• The government's plans for spending on the unlawful Targeted Compliance Framework and (un)employment services system

• The opposition's misinformation campaign against migrants and their access to welfare and tax benefits

This is an opportunity for people who are being harmed by the Albanese government's policy choices to come together and find the antidote to despair in our community.

This event is free for all to attend and will kick off at 7:00pm AEST / 6:30pm ACST / 5:00pm AWST on Tuesday 19 May.
