Accompanying the screening of the extraordinary documentary Mother Tongue, director Gabina Funegra will give insight into her filmmaking practice, its connection to her academic research, and the impacts and outcomes of her work.

Mother Tongue is a body of work that comprises of four visual ethnographic film studies, with each film a companion to the next. This develops a varied approach to the study, working through theoretical issues raised by her original visual film research work with diverse communities across the globe engaged in the revitalisation of Quechua. Mother Tongue offers a unique contemporary contribution to the field.

Dr Gabina Funegra and Rebecca Harcourt

Dr Gabina Funegra is a UNSW Alumna, who completed her PhD in the School of Humanities and Languages in 2017. Her work as a filmmaker and academic is underpinned by the objective to promote Quechua as an attractive, interesting and vital language for future generations.

This conversation will be moderated by Rebecca Harcourt (Program Manager, Indigenous Business Education, UNSW Business School).
