Event description

We invite you to an Apollo Bay screening of Motherhood in the Colony.  This is a special opportunity on Gadubanud Country to experience this film with your community, participating in amplifying First Nations voices, learning, listening, witnessing, supporting…

Motherhood in the Colony is a storytelling project by celebrated Worimi filmmaker Genevieve Grieves and renowned Palestinian artist, Aseel Tayah, supported by Common Ground.  It explores the connections and shared struggles of Indigenous women through the lens of motherhood, which emerges as a transmission of wisdoms across generations, a promise of a culture’s survival and of its flourishing.

In a world shaped by violence and erasure, Motherhood in the Colony, brings eight First Nations and Palestinian women together.  Through intimate storytelling, the film unravels stories of colonial trauma and mothering as an act of resistance, while inviting audiences to listen, learn and envision a future beyond the oppressive structures of colonisation.

Created on the lands of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation in Victoria, this is a Bukjeh and GARUWA Film, in association with Common Ground.  From the river to the sea. Always was, always will be.

PLEASE NOTE: Motherhood in the Colony touches on sensitive subject matter, including violence and the death of children. It does not include graphic images. However, the film may not be suitable for children and some young people unless they are already engaged in conversations about these issues. We leave the decision to the discretion of their parents and/or caregivers.
