Workshop Overview
Join us for a tactile journey into the world of traditional letterpress printmaking. This one-day workshop celebrates the artistry, history, and technical craft of letterpress, offering artists and printmakers a rare opportunity to engage with wood and metal type, analogue tools, and historical printing presses in a fully hands-on environment.
Led by typographer and design educator Clint Harvey and resident artist/printmaker Dzintra Menesis, participants will explore both the historical roots and contemporary applications of letterpress print.
What to Expect
1. Introduction & Demonstration
Welcome and safety overview
A guided walk-through of the press room
Understanding the tools of the trade: reglets, galleys, quoins, furniture, diphthongs and more
A brief illustrated history of letterpress and its influence on design today
2. Setting the Stage
Basics of typesetting using wood and metal type
Locking up forms in a chase
Introduction to inking and press operation
3. Hands-On Printing
Proofing and refining type compositions
Mixing inks and experimenting with colour
Creating your own personalised prints to take home
4. Print & Reflect
Showcase and discussion of prints
Reflections on typography, technique, and the tactile experience
Q&A and open dialogue about printmaking practices
Workshop Outcomes
By the end of the day, participants will:
Understand key terminology, equipment, and principles of letterpress
Produce their own letterpress print using traditional materials and presses
Leave inspired to continue the craft in their own practice and to have dialogue between old-school craftsmanship and contemporary design
