moviejuice + DOGMILK present A RIVER IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SKY
Event description
Saturday 8th of February
Doors 6pm, Screening 6.30pm
Union Cinema, Victoria Dr, Adelaide
A River in the Middle of the Sky paints a journal-like portrait of Torajan videographer Victor Konda, his community and personal life, its grief and its joy.
Despite issues with his vision, Victor became fascinated with the moving image, filming social events, ceremonies and rituals in Toraja, Indonesia, with his company DSTV. From a grandmother’s body lovingly prepared by her family to a village mourning a young man’s death, Victor has recorded Torajan life since 2005, filming both public and personal moments with equal dedication.
His archives provide a rich and joyful account of the singular Torajan approach to living, dying and attest to his vital contributions to the construction of a collective memory.
The film is the result of over 7 years of work and collaboration between Wahyu, Chris and Victor, and the first in what will hopefully be a few different films to come from this project.
Chris will be joined by Wahyu and Victor, flying out from Indonesia for the occasion, for a panel discussion after the screening.
This event will take place on unceded Kaurna Land. Always was, always will be Aboriginal land.
