'Moving Again' is a 5Rhythms class with certified teacher, Elisa Hollenberg

With 5Rhythms, we have the possibility to move in a myriad of creative ways to expand our movement vocabularies.

This two-hour class will teach the 'basics' of the 5Rhythms and help us to start 'moving again', in new ways.

All are welcome here: all bodies, races, religions, genders, sexual orientations, abilities & disabilities, and movement experience.

In this class, together, we will:

    • explore the movement vocabulary of the 5Rhythms, breaking it down into small components and learning how they all fit together (flowing, staccato, chaos, lyrical and stillness), to be able to eventually move seamlessly and in flowing ways.
    • build new neural pathways for movement, finding new possibilities.
    • loosen-up old or stuck movement patterns.
    • recognize what movements are easy and which are hard and leaning into the ones that bring ease.
    • re-pattern how the body moves.
    • train muscle memory during and between classes.
    • take a collective break from sitting, screens.
    • have opportunities for social connection.
    • be inspired to move by good music.

All fitness levels and experience with movement or dance are welcome.

We welcome a wide range of ages to this class, starting at 18 years old, up to 100.

This venue has a wheelchair accessible entrance, although unfortunately, bathrooms are not wide enough to accommodate a wheelchair.  Mobility devices must be dry and non-marking for the dance floor.

There will be a variety of songs from a wide range of genres that catalyze movements in the 5Rhythms. The facilitator creates a unique playlist each time so the music will be different from class-to-class.

It is suggested to wear comfortable clothing (like yoga pants, leggings, tank tops, t-shirts, shorts, long tunics or skirts/dresses) that you don't mind sweating in and that allows you a full range of motion. Bring a bottle of water and a small mat to sit on (optional), if you like, for the beginning or end of class.

Full 5-class packages and single advance tickets are available. Dancers are welcome to drop-in and pay cash at the door, provided we haven't reached capacity with advance ticket sales.

Please note that the first four classes, Oct 20, Nov 3, Nov 17 and Dec 1 will be 5Rhythms classes, taught by Elisa

Dec 15 will be a special class jointly facilitated by Elisa (5Rhythms) and Adriel, another conscious dance facilitator who teaches at the same time, in the same studio, on alternate weeks.  It will be an opportunity for participants to sample a variety of different movement possibilities.

If you have not attended a 5Rhythms class before, here is a list of FAQs and community agreements, for this class.

    Q. How do I get to this class by public transit?
    A. Take the Bloor subway line (the green line) to Kipling Subway station.  Then take the 44 bus from Kipling station to New Toronto street.  Walk east along New Toronto street for one block (2 min walk) and you will be at the studio.

    Q. Is there parking near the studio?

    A. You may wish to park at the "Ford Performance Centre", just off of New Toronto street.  It is free parking.  Then walk east along New Toronto street for one block (2 min walk) and you will be at the studio.  Otherwise, there is street parking nearby.

    Q. What is the format of this class?

    A. In this class, there will be a warm-up period where dancers will arrive and move to music (stretching and moving to the music as you like) for about 20 minutes. This will be followed by an opening circle and some group instruction for what will be taught that day with some movement activities. There will then be a period of dancing that lasts for about an hour (called a Wave, with the 5Rhythms - flowing ~ staccato ~ chaos ~ lyrical ~ stillness - in sequence) with some verbal facilitation during this time. The class will gather at the end as a group, to close.

    Q. What is the duration of this class?

    A. The class is 2 hours long. We start and end our movement journey together. If you really must leave before the end of class, please let the facilitator know before you go.

    Q. What is the music like?

    A. There will be a variety of songs from a wide range of genres that catalyze movements in the 5Rhythms. The facilitator creates a unique playlist each time so the music will be different from class-to-class. The music starts-off slow in flowing, then speeds up and inspires more vigorous movement in staccato, reaches a peak in chaos, then becomes lighter, soulful or playful in lyrical and becomes connecting and vast, in stillness. The music inspires movements of the 5Rhythms Wave in sequence, from flowing-->staccato-->chaos-->lyrical-->stillness.

    Q. What should I wear and is there anything I need to bring to class?

    A. It is suggested to wear comfortable clothing (like yoga pants, leggings, tank tops, t-shirts, shorts, long tunics or skirts/dresses) that you don't mind sweating in and that allows you a full range of motion. You may wish to dress in layers since you may become warmer as we dance, and cooler at the end of class. We dance bare-footed, or in grippy socks or light-soled dance shoes (indoor shoes only). Bring a bottle of water and a small mat to sit on (optional), if you like, for the beginning or end of class.

    Q. Do I need to be a dancer, or have a certain level of experience or fitness?

    A. All fitness levels and experience with movement or dance are welcome at class. In 5Rhythms, we move in unstructured ways, and there are no set movements that everyone needs to do in the same way. Although there is a common movement vocabulary and specific energies associated with each of the rhythms that we will learn, we adapt the movements to our respective bodies and can move according to our abilities on that day. It is possible to dance at your own pace, whether that is slowly, doing a small dance or really vigorously, depending on your energy, fitness level, abilities and how you are feeling on any given day.

    Q. What is the age-range for this class?

    A. We welcome a wide range of ages to this class, starting at 18 years old, up to 100.

    Q. Is the venue wheelchair/walker accessible?

    A. This venue has a wheelchair accessible entrance, although unfortunately, bathrooms are not wide enough to accommodate a wheelchair. Mobility devices must be dry and non-marking for the dance floor.

    Q. Will I be dancing on my own, or with others in this class?

    A. In 5Rhythms dancing, we mostly dance on our own. However, there are usually some instructed activities and verbal invitations in which the facilitator may invite dancers to dance in groups or pairs. This does not involve any physical contact. Also, any invitation for dancing with others is optional, and you can decide to dance on your own at any time.

Here are some other community guidelines that I would ask everyone to agree to, for this class:

-We practice in a sober and substance-free environment (excluding substances used for medical reasons)

-We turn our phones off - we do not take photos/videos, or use Shazam

-We communicate using movement not words, on the dance floor. Please take any verbal conversations, outside.

-We are a scent-sensitive space. Please keep synthetic perfumes and essential oils off the dance floor.

-We welcome all races, religions, gender identities, sexual orientations, shapes & sizes, abilities & disabilities, languages, and movement experience.

I look forward to dancing with you! If you have any questions, please let me know by reaching out to me, at: elisa.hollenberg@gmail.com
