"Happy Sad Man"

A screening, and Q&A with the Director,

for The Men's Table community

Thursday 7th October at 7:00 pm

Hi, I’m Mark from MT19.

I have a background in film and television and early this year at our Table we talked about making videos that Men’s Tables would want to watch and talk about. Some time later, Stuart from our Table commented on an Australian feature-length documentary called “Happy Sad Man”.

The documentary follows five men from Bondi Beach to the outback; a war photographer traversing global conflict zones, a farmer and an outreach worker from rural Victoria, a musical nomad and a sensitive dog-loving artist. Each portrait is an intimate and heartwarming look into vulnerability, friendship and compassion.

The Australian called it “A surprisingly invigorating film”. Many men and their partners have said they were deeply moved by the film. Ben Hughes, co-founder of The Men's Table, saw a screening at the Enmore Theatre last year and loved it.

Released in 2018, the film isn’t available on the streaming platforms so I contacted the film’s director Genevieve Bailey. She is very keen to organise a special screening for The Men’s Table community of men, and their partners and friends.

We've organised for a screening on Thursday 7th October. The ticket price is $20 which allows any number of people in your household to watch the film. As a bonus, Genevieve Bailey has offered to be present for a Q&A session after the film so that the community of viewers can ask questions. The proceeds go to the Director, who is redeeming her investment in the production of the film.

This might be a great opportunity to invite a friend who is not yet part of The Men's Table community to join us in a heart-opening experience and a generative discussion afterwards about men sharing about the highs and lows of their lives in a safe place.

You can learn more at https://happysadman.org/ where you can watch a trailer. I hope we can all share this amazing film as a Men’s Table community.

Mark Muirhead, MT19

P.S.

Access/ Tech to view; The film will be streamed direct from the director’s server and no special app is needed. People who register will receive a link which will allow them to watch the film at any time in the 24 hours before the scheduled screening and Q&A session

Rating is M (mild infrequent coarse language) ;

Note from Director about suitability for children. "We generally find parents decide depending on their children, most common is for ages 13 or 14 or older. We have had parents bring younger children but find it more suitable for teens generally"
