Mount Piper Volcano Circuit and Summit - Grade 4 (medium)
Event description
The Mitchell Club invites you to join them on the Mount Piper Volcano Circuit and Summit near Broadford. This walk is part of the Try Bushwalking Month, celebrating the 90th Anniversary of Bushwalking Victoria, the peak body representing 60+ bushwalking clubs across Victoria.
Come walk in a local landmark that has been confused by many to have been a extinct volcano, but it is in reality largely made up of sedimentary rocks riddled with quartz veins. The conservation reserve is home to two threatened species - the Golden Sun-moth and the large and small Ant-blue Butterflies. It is also home to many bird and animal species, including the majestic Wedge Tailed Eagle.
There are two walks in the Mt Piper Conservation Reserve - the Summit Walk at 2.8 km and the Circuit Walk of 5.7 km. Participants can choose to complete 1 walk, or both. Please let the leader know your plans.
DISTANCE: Summit Walk 2.8km. Circuit Walk 5.7km. Combined Walk 6.7km. Please let the leader know which you prefer to do (in the questions/comments for the leader box on registration).
WHO IS THIS WALK FOR? This walk is suitable for beginners wanting to start bushwalking, with some fitness, as the summit walk is steep, and requires some scrambling.
CHILDREN AND PETS: Children under 18 are welcome if you feel they can can complete the walk comfortably, they must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Due to the nature of the walk, we ask you to leave dogs and other pets at home. Please contact the club directly to inquire about service animals, and any family or pet friendly walks.
AWT GRADE 4 (Medium): The Summit walk is Grade 4 and the Circuit walk is Grade 3. The combined walk is Grade 4. AWT Grade information.
PACE: The walk will be slow and steady with breaks as required.
TOTAL ASCENT: 440m. The track becomes steeper as you near the summit and scrambling for a short distance is required.
WALK DESCRIPTION:
There are two walks in the Mt Piper Conservation Reserve - the Summit Walk is 2.8 km which has switchbacks in the track as it becomes steeper. As you near the the summit there is a short distance where some scrambling over rocks is required. Once the summit is reached you will have uninterrupted 360 degree views. The Circuit Walk is 5.7 km and this walk contours around the base of Mt Piper and crosses deep gullies and ridges. These walks will be available as individual walks or combined into a single walk of 6.7 km.
MEETING POINT: Meeting point is the corner of Jeffreys Lane and Mt Piper Lane where a marshal will assist with parking.
DIRECTIONS: Jeffreys Lane is 1.5km south of Broadford on the Broadford Kilmore Road.

TOILETS: No toilets are available in the Mt Piper Conservation Reserve, public toilets are available in Broadford and Kilmore.
