Looking for alternatives to static slides and one-way lectures? This hands-on, six-session workshop will give you practical skills for creating and curating multimedia and interactive learning experiences. Each session pairs a learning-design theory with a design challenge, so you'll leave not just with new ideas but with real materials you can use in your own courses. Across the workshop you'll apply Mayer's Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning to sharpen slide design, use the ICAP framework to build genuinely interactive activities, design for accessibility using Universal Design for Learning, and plan, capture, and edit a short instructional video — including one in-person hands-on session on video capture.
Throughout, you'll explore how AI tools fit into each stage of the process — from drafting slides and scripts to auto-captioning and AI avatars — and use frameworks like TPACK to evaluate whether a given tool actually serves your teaching, or just adds novelty. The workshop closes with a portfolio share and a look at building sustainable workflows, so the content you create keeps working for you well beyond the workshop. No special technical background required — just a willingness to experiment, redesign, and create.
Workshop Learning Outcomes:
Apply learning and design theories to evaluate and improve multimedia learning materials
Select and use digital tools and practices, including AI, to create interactive learning activities
Develop interactive learning experiences that foster active engagement and meaningful student participation
Create multimedia content that meets accessibility standards and accommodates diverse learning needs
Establish sustainable workflows for creating, implementing, maintaining and improving multimedia content
Critically evaluate how AI and other digital tools might affect trends and practices in digital learning creation
*Note: This workshop qualifies as an elective for the Certificate in University Teaching and Learning (CUTL) for those participants who are interested in completing the certificate. Contact the facilitator for details on how to earn credit.
