Senior Quantum Physics and Relativity - Detecting Muon's with the EduMOD from mDetect + Cloud Chambers

Event description

Quantum Physics is all around us. As you read this right now, tiny subatomic particles called Muons are travelling through your body at nearly the speed of light! Attain 5 hours of Professional Development to count towards your accreditation.

In this unique Professional Development Workshop for Physics teachers you will get hands on with detecting Muons with the EduMOD Muon Detector from mDetect. The Muon detector was designed by a team of Scientists at Swimburne University who have now formed a company; mDetect, with none other then Particle Physicist Prof.Alan Duffy as their CEO.

Prior to the workshop you will sent the Muon Detector and together we will use the detectors to study Muon physics and Relativity. You will be able to use the detector for 1 week after the work shop before sending it back.

Learning Outcomes, you will learn how to;

  1. Setup and connect the detector to your computer.
  2. Record data on Muon events.
  3. Analyze data and create Muon histograms
  4. Capture Muon events on your schools digital Oscilloscope.
  5. Explore additional projects you can do with the EduMOD detector
  6. Use the learning resources (detailed lesson plans) in your classroom to teach Relativity and Muon Physics.

We will also explore other ways to detect subatomic particles such as How to Build your own Cloud Chamber!

N.B. This workshop is online via Zoom and requires the use of a laptop and Microsoft Excel. You will also need a Digital Oscilloscope if you want to see the trace detections on an Oscilloscope but this is not a requirement of the workshop.
