'Murmations' at Eight O'Clock Sharp

Murmurations is a Sydney-based trio at the forefront of a new generation of Australian improvising musicians. Emerging from a close creative collaboration, Sabine Tapia, Thomas Odell and Matt Simmonds combine the intricacies of the piano trio tradition with expansive original compositions.

Drawing on influences from folk, improvised music and contemporary jazz, the trio has developed a distinctive musical language shaped by the individual creative voices of its members. In late 2025, Murmurations recorded its debut album, capturing the evolution of a sound that is both exploratory and deeply connected.

Their music unfolds as three streams that weave through texture, space and density, balancing intricate interplay with openness and spontaneity. The result is a richly collaborative approach to improvisation that offers a fresh perspective on contemporary Australian jazz while maintaining a sonic identity uniquely their own.
