Event description

You’re invited to Muse at The Mews

Muse is a casual gathering with presentations about art, design and ideas.

Join us on Thursday 13 November, as Ross Potter shares his experiences from his residencies, the inspirations behind his journeys, and insights into his future plans.

Potter’s original inspiration to take the artistic pathway was drawn from a desire to travel to unique places in search of inspiration.

The majority of his time is spent in a studio comfortably drawing from reference images, a catalogue he has personally accumulated from his experiences, but every now and then the explorer within takes him to some interesting environments, both local and abroad, searching for new material.

Potter has always been fascinated by connecting with people and hearing their stories. When he takes on an artist residency, this allows him to immerse himself in the local environment, build relationships and hear the people of the area share their interpretations of their surroundings.

Ross Potter is a Kamilaroi man and professional artist living in Walyalup / Fremantle. He works with pencil and paper to produce highly detailed, often large-scale representations of his subjects. Through magnifying microscopic features, Ross brings the abstractions of reality to our attention while telling compelling stories of everyday life.

One of his most well-known works is a life-sized drawing of Perth Zoo’s beloved elephant Tricia, which he created in the gallery during Fremantle Arts Centre’s hugely popular kids’ exhibition Animaze: Amazing Animals for Kids in 2018. Ross’ work has also been presented in numerous exhibitions and was showcased in the Fremantle Biennale and at Boola Bardip WA Museum.

Ross has worked in numerous collections and undertaken multiple artist residencies, including at Cossack, Margaret River and Herhùsid in Iceland.

We would love to see you there!
