Batala Philly

Composer and musical director, Giba enlisted the help of friends from the bands and from Salvador in order to create the visual identity of the band. The instruments and clothings are all manufactured in Salvador, Bahia, where the band has a social program that gives jobs to many families. From there they are shipped to the bands around the world.

In 2017, that project arrived to Philadelphia, expanding the East Coast bands of Washington DC and New York in the United States. After some restructure and new direction, we reformed as Batala Philly in May 2021 and we are the only Batala approved band in Philadelphia. Today, there are 42 and counting Batala bands around the world, in 15 countries and a worldwide membership of over 1,000 percussionists.

In Batala Philly we have a dynamic and passionate group of community musicians based in Philadelphia but performing all over the world. We are run entirely by volunteers and any proceeds from gigs go back into running the band to pay for things like costumes, drums and rehearsal space.

Rawk U

.

Daniel Cullen founded Rawk U with a simple but powerful mission: to share the excitement about music that gets him “moving and waking up happy every day” with students throughout Philadelphia.

In those early days, Daniel was teaching guitar lessons out of his house, advertising for free online, and building a student base one lesson at a time. Within just a month, word spread so quickly that he had 15-20 students–all adults who found him through his grassroots approach. As demand grew and Daniel moved into a proper studio space, the school evolved to serve both children and adults, but the core philosophy remained the same.

After working at several other music schools in the area, Daniel recognized something was missing in music education. Students were being rushed through material without building proper fundamentals, or they were stuck in rigid classical approaches that didn’t connect with the music they actually wanted to play. Rawk U was born from the desire to create something different–a place where students could learn solid musical foundations while playing the songs they know and love.

Whether you’re picking up a guitar for the first time or returning to music after years away, our Philadelphia guitar instructors provide the perfect blend of solid fundamentals and songs you actually want to play. At Rawk U School of Music, we believe guitar lessons should get you playing recognizable music within your first month while building the proper technique that will serve you for life. Our experienced guitar teachers in Philadelphia work with students from age 7 to adult, tailoring each lesson to your musical goals and learning style. From acoustic fingerpicking to electric rock solos, we’ll help you discover the joy and confidence that comes from truly mastering the guitar.

Lazy Villians

Lazy Villians

Lazy Villains are a Philadelphia-based Americana band. They will hold your heart hostage with their diabolical mix of layered harmony, soulful lyrics, and raging riffs. That is, if they feel like it…

The project originated in 2022 when singer-songwriter Sam Milz and guitarist Sean Heffernan moved to Philadelphia from State College, Pennsylvania. They gravitated to East Kensington where they found a thriving artistic community. In late 2023, drummer Jack Hopkins and bassist Mike Thatcher joined the Villains to help the duo arrange a set of original songs for their live debut. They spent the next two years refining their live sound and gaining recognition in the local Philadelphia music scene. During that time, the Villains added keyboardist Reed Bodenstein to the lineup to round out their sound. As of 2026, the band has seen multiple high-profile gig opportunities including opening for country virtuoso Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives.

Lazy Villains music is penned mainly by Milz and Heffernan– who initially connected over a shared obsession with the guitar dynamic on Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, the songwriting of Neil Young, and the freedom of musical expression in the blues. Since then, their appreciation for improvisation and authenticity has led them down a country music rabbit hole. In addition to their rhythmic contributions to the Villains’ sound, Hopkins and Thatcher’s vocal harmonies bring an element to the music reminiscent of The Band and Buck Owens & the Buckaroos.

The Villains have been hard at work on Thrown, their first release featuring six original songs and one cover. The album is set to be released in July of 2026.

Lazy Villains' Thrown was released in July of 2026. Thrown marks the first time guitarists Sean Heffernan and Sam Milz have entered the studio with drummer Jack Hopkins, bassist Mike Thatcher, and keyboardist Reed Bodenstein. The release captures Milz and Heffernan’s fresh take on the classic sounds that have inspired them since they first met in 2017.
