Music Night @ The Zamia Vol.10

Marc Hackenberg has lived in Tamborine Mountain for five years and is getting more and more involved with the local music and theatre scene. Here is what he had to say about his project:

“I first had the idea to create Electronic Music live on a stage when I was running my studio Sample Space, where we encouraged artists playing in my events to push boundaries of what was possible as a DJ. The ability to generate, shape and mix all sounds on stage is appealing because it can be done without loss of quality, is always unique, and sounds unlike anything that is possible with traditional DJing. It also creates inspiration through happy accidents.

I had seen the likes of Giuseppe Ottaviani use laptop-driven live setups, while techno artists started bringing more and more hardware without laptops to create their shows on a stage (Kink! comes to mind). And who could forget Daft Punk doing their Alive show back in the day.

Imposing the limitations for this project definitely increased the challenge, yet it also drove a lot of research and discovery of what was possible with modern control equipment and hardware sound generators, as well as analog summing and compression. Even now I still feel like I am only scratching the surface of the ever-expanding live rig. With time I expect to introduce more refinements and improvisation, and probably add some more layers to choose from.

I was excited to premiere Tranceformation Live in 2025, another step in the journey of musical evolution. You can look forward to completely rebuilt and reimagined songs, with a few of my own creations thrown in for good measure, to take us beyond the horizon and to the stars.”
