My Climate Action: Ecosystem Restoration

Event description

Australia is currently one of the poorest performers on SDG 13, Climate Action, ranking 161st on the World SDG Index. We need to change that.

Introducing the United Nations Association of Australia Young Professionals 2022 National Event Series, My Climate Action.

A four part online series that provides young professionals with ideas, actionable resources, and tools to directly contribute towards climate change mitigation.

Join us on Wednesday 27th April at 6pm AEST for event one which will focus on Ecosystem Restoration as we invite key speakers to discuss the practical actions we can all take in our homes, communities, and wider environment to positively contribute towards climate change mitigation.

The first event in our series features two inspirational practitioners of environmental restoration, Jimi and Jessica.

Jimi Gatland

A long-term vegetarian, Jimi has had a passion for animals and the environment for as long as he can remember. But it was in 2012, during a year-long sabbatical throughout South-East Asia and India, that he developed a keen interest in the processes that brought food to the end of his fork. During this time, he worked alongside the likes of Dr Vandana Shiva and others who inspired him to find ways to remedy the damaging effects that the industrialised food system is having on the planet and our health. To that end, community gardening was a perfect fit.

Jimi is the president of Lennox Community Gardens and is a representative for Community Gardens Australia. He has helped found a number of environmentally focused organisations, including Enova Community Energy and his own educational start-up — Green Games. Jimi lives in Northern NSW in an all-electric home. In his spare time, you will find him tearing around in his solar-powered Nissan Leaf or tending to his garden and over 100 fruit trees.

Jessica Pinder

Jessica is a conservation ecologist and policymaker, who is passionate about engaging with youth, communities and First Nations peoples to restore and conserve our unique Australian ecosystems. In her current role, Jessica works to improve protections for and rehabilitation of koala habitat in SEQ, and has recently launched a community ecosystem restoration program through the Jane Goodall Institute Australia called Embrace the Wild.
