The Digital Duty of Care and the Online Safety Act
The Online Safety Amendment (Digital Duty of Care) Bill 2026 is much anticipated but also hotly contested. In this session, we will unpack the Bill as it currently stands, exploring how it arrived in its current shape, potential points of contention and spaces for potential amendments and improvements.
Presenter
Rys Farthing is a Professorial Research Fellow at News & Media Research Centre. Her work focuses on developing high quality evidence to inform policy making, especially around tech policy and children's rights. Rys worked at civil society organisations such as 5Rights Foundation (UK) and Fairplay (US) and with universities such as the University of Oxford (UK), McGill University (Montreal) and RMIT University (Australia). Rys holds a PhD from the University of Oxford and is currently the Chief Research Officer for Reset.Tech. Her research has been featured in Washington Post, the BBC, the ABC, CNN and others.
