Event description

NAIDOC Week: Aboriginal Painting workshop

Who:  children aged 5-10 years

Where: Level 1 near Myer

In this class children will enjoy learning about these art symbols and their significance to Aboriginal people through painting directly onto canvas. We will take this opportunity to teach the children how to apply Aboriginal symbols to their own family and home environment. In these art classes children will be given a unique insight and understanding into Aboriginal culture and identity. Certain skills such as dot painting will be practiced to create an art piece for children to take home and share.

Children will be supervised by the Emali early learning centre team who are highly trained educators to support your child throughout this workshop. Emali respects and acknowledges the original custodians of the land and are partnering with Pwerle to help support and support the children as they share their own individual stories. Children and childcare is what Emali know best so please join us to continue the connection to the great country of Australia as one.

This workshop will be presented by Pwerle Gallery Director and Alyawarre woman Jade Akamarre, sister Mariah Akamarre who is the featured artist this year and Shane Mankitya Cook (also known as Kooka), proud Wulli Wulli and Guwa (Koa) man. Jade and Mariah are established Aboriginal artists following the footsteps of their grandmother and great grandmother Barbara Weir and Minnie Pwerle. Artworks such as theirs ensures the continuation of an ancient and rich cultural heritage while acknowledging the close bond still retained by the artist to their country ‘Atnwengerrp'. Shane's practice as an artist began from a young age learning traditional painting from his mother, his interests then developed further into graffiti culture, street art and tattooing as his career developed. These art movements are hugely prominent in Shane’s unique contemporary style he has developed which has led him to becoming a nationally recognised artist.
