Names in the Margins with Sean Reynolds
Description
Our guest speaker Sean Reynolds is a writer and historian based in Melbourne. Sean has entitled this talk Names in the Margins. His research has been uncovering the stories of unknown characters from police and court records of 19th century Melbourne.
For example, Freda Kuno who committed crimes under six different names. She was a woman who relied on blending in. Her prison record has left the space for identifying marks blank.
Or Jane Vaughan who was sentenced more than sixty times. The last time was for stealing a pair of boots she told the court she needed and couldn’t afford. The newspapers called her incorrigible. The gaol register recorded her conduct as good, over, and over again.
