Nangak Tamboree Post-Burn BioBlitz
Event description
Join DCMC and Nangak Tamboree Wildlife Sanctuary for a special BioBlitz as part of the 2025 Great Southern BioBlitz—a four-day event where Southern Hemisphere communities record as many species as possible using the iNaturalist app.
Explore the grassy woodlands of Nangak Tamboree, cared for by the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Narrap Rangers and supported by the Nangak Tamboree Wildlife Sanctuary land management crew and volunteers, as we record the plants, animals, and fungi along Darebin Creek. We’re especially keen to see what’s emerging after the recent cultural burn — a unique glimpse of natural regeneration!
Whether you're a nature lover, citizen scientist, or just curious, this is a great chance to get up close with nature, from wildflowers to insects, reptiles, and maybe even woodland birds, while recording sightings along the way.
No experience needed. We’ll show you how to use iNaturalist. Just bring your phone and curiosity!
Where: Nangak Tamboree reserve, between the La Trobe Uni sports fields and Darebin Creek
Meet: at the entrance gate at the end of the drive off Plenty Rd, next to the Golf Park (see map below).
What to bring: Smartphone with iNaturalist app already downloaded, drinking water, sunhat
What to wear: sturdy shoes, long pants, clothing suited to the weather
Observations will contribute towards the Nangak Tamboree Great Southern BioBlitz project on iNaturalist. Join the project to be eligible for a prize from the Wildlife Sanctuary for the most species observed during the 4-day BioBlitz (24–27 Oct). Boost your count by joining the Sanctuary’s citizen science events.
