Join Fiona Mackenzie, a seasoned Montessori educator with over twenty years of experience and author of Writing is a Journey – Tips, Lessons, and Montessori Perspective for Teachers. This workshop will draw from her extensive background and her recent publication to enhance narrative writing instruction in Montessori settings for children aged 6-12, with a focus on the following areas:
· Small moments have a gigantic impact – generating writing from what children know.
· Writing exercises to create original ideas.
· Teaching a bank of writing skills to foster independence.
· Using read-a-louds and mentor texts to recognise author techniques.

About Fiona Mackenzie
Fiona is a writer and educator, born and raised in New Zealand, now based in Sydney, Australia. She has spent more than twenty years teaching children ages six to twelve in Montessori classrooms and, prior to that, in NZ and Australian public schools. Along this journey, she developed and honed her expertise in teaching writing to children.
In addition to being a qualified primary classroom teacher, she has an AMI Montessori Teaching Diploma (six to twelve-year-olds), a B.A. Communication majoring in Radio and Sound, and an M.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Technology, Sydney.
Writing is a Journey – Tips Lessons and Montessori Perspective for Teachers, is Fiona’s first book, and she hopes it will assist not only Montessori teachers but educators everywhere who welcome guidance in teaching narrative writing for ages six to twelve.
Fiona is passionate about teaching writing to primary age children, giving practical guidance in crafting narrative skills for the telling of powerful stories. She has spent the majority of her time teaching children aged nine to twelve in Montessori classrooms and is able to offer a wealth of experience in working with this age group alongside tips and lessons for six to nine-year-old beginning writers.
