Event description

A community choir for all singers, all ages, all genders.

The Narrm TLC Choir is run by El and Rach - two Registered Music Therapists who believe that everyone can sing, and that singing together is transformative. The point of this choir is to create opportunities for us to connect with our bodies, release, regulate our nervous systems, and build and strengthen our connection to people in our community. It's casual and informal and runs roughly every fortnight. We ask that you please arrive on time (by 7pm), and let us know if you register but aren't coming anymore, so that we can open up space for others!

Elly and Rach both have waged incomes and run this choir as an act of love and community service rather than to make money. We are singing on unceded Wurundjeri Country, so we do ask all singers to make a donation each week - this money goes towards paying the rent (to the Wurundjeri Land Council) or otherwise to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led collectives or crowdfunders that come up. Please bring cash to donate on the night, or ensure to check the Narrm TLC Choir Instagram where we will post a link to donate electronically each choir session.

What to expect:

  • We sing one song per session and try to choose songs that the majority of the group will know
  • Generally the songs are ~nostalgic bangers ~ aimed to give everyone the opportunity to sing their heart out to a song they will likely have heard before
  • Each session Elly and Rach alternate roles: one of us leading a warm up and playing the piano accompaniment, and the other person arranging the song for us to sing
  • We sing in harmony, splitting into three parts: highs, mids, lows
  • The parts aren't gendered and we believe strongly that singing can and should be a gender affirming experience - so if you want to explore or develop your lower or higher range and haven't had the opportunity to do this before, come give it a try! (This is Elly's particular area of interest, so come speak to them if you feel comfy to)
  • We try to keep numbers low to support covid safety and to create a more personal vibe - we aim for around 30 people per session and like to be able to meet people and keep numbers low enough that it doesn't feel anonymous (this is why we have a registration set up)
  • Some folks have been coming for a while or are friends with Rach and Elly, so the vibe is casual and there is always chatter before and after, but if you're just coming for a sing and don't feel up for conversation, that's cool too
  • Elly and Rach choose the songs based on how well suited they are for choir arrangements/harmonies; we're open to suggestions but please don't be offended if we don't choose it - not every song works well for a choir!
  • There are new singers there every choir sesh! You will not be the only one :')
