Event description

National Legal Aid is pleased to launch the report from our 2024 Legal Aid Private Practitioners’ Census. This project was designed and delivered by the University of New South Wales' Social Policy Research Centre (UNSW SPRC). It is the first of its kind in Australia and the second ever globally.

The report will be launched by the Attorney-General Hon Mark Dreyfus KC MP. Natasha Cortis, Associate Professor and author of the report, will give an overview of the findings on the day. The launch will also include some reflections from the NSW Attorney-General Hon Michael Daley.

Legal Aid services are essential for the fair, equal, and efficient functioning of the justice system. Many of these services are delivered by private lawyers. Over 1000 of private lawyers shared their experience delivering legal aid, giving us insights into who is delivering legal aid, who is accessing it, where there are shortfalls in service delivery, and what needs to be done to maintain access to justice via Legal Aid services.

We hope that you will join us in celebrating the launch of this very important report and hear about what is needed to maintain a thriving legal aid system where justice is accessible for all.
