National Rural and Islands Mental Health Forum - 28th October 2026
Description
11am - Welcome and Introductions
11:05am - Breaking Down Barriers: Improving Access to Advice and Support in Rural and Island Communities. Chris Nelson, Service Manager at Change Mental Health's National Advice and Support Service
Access to advice and support should not be determined by postcode. By understanding and addressing the distinct challenges of rural and island communities, we can create more accessible, responsive, and equitable services for everyone. Chris will touch on how the Service:
Ensures equitable access to advice and support services, regardless of geography.
Recognises the unique challenges faced by people living in rural and island locations.
Creates inclusive, person-centred services that improve outcomes, wellbeing, and social inclusion.
We will explore the role the National Advice and Support Service can play in tackling the big challenges.
11:45am - Prevention, Connection and Impact: Insights from the Farmstrong Scotland Review - Alix Ritchie. Farmstrong Scotland Director
What difference can preventative wellbeing programmes make? Drawing on Farmstrong Scotland’s independent review, this presentation explores the evidence, highlights what farmers and crofters value most, and considers the role collaboration can play in building healthier, more connected rural and island communities.
12:25pm – The Lived Experiences of Those Occupationally Aligned with Livestock Farmers; The Role, The Impact and The Need for Support. Jennifer Howse, Harper and Keele
Research has shown that livestock farmers may speak about well-being challenges with those who are occupationally positioned alongside them (e.g., auctioneers, consultants, veterinary professionals, assurance scheme employees), who are as a result in a valuable position to support farmer well-being. However, holding this position can expose individuals to challenging situations, difficulties in knowing how to advise and well-being impacts which go beyond those to be expected as part of their primary role. Research completed over the last 18 months has provided the lived experiences of those who are occupationally positioned alongside livestock farmers as well as the crucial need for the development of well-being support for these individuals.
