11:10am: The Power of Edutainment - From Yawns to Wows

Rafael Bucater BPhysEd

Break free from traditional lectures by using interactive videos, gamification, and narrative hooks to keep attention locked in. Blending storytelling, gamification, and multimedia for deep student engagement. Hands up—be honest—how many of you have been in a professional development session where, about 15 minutes in, your mind started wandering to lunch? Or emails? Or… literally anywhere else? Now imagine this: That same session … but you’re leaning forward, scribbling notes, laughing at the examples, and feeling excited to try the ideas tomorrow. That’s not a fantasy, that’s the power of edutainment. From Yawns to Wows isn’t about dumbing things down or turning teaching into a comedy act. It’s about harnessing the science of engagement—storytelling, surprise, humour, and technology—to make learning an experience that sticks. We’re talking about:

  • Hooking attention with a compelling narrative.

  • Keeping brains engaged through interactive technology, such as live polls, games, or instant feedback tools.

  • Making content memorable so learners retain it long after they leave the room.

We will review how to combine solid pedagogy with the creative spark of entertainment, without losing academic rigour, so your learners go from checking the clock … to wishing they had more time.
