Nature after dark (spring tour): insects and wildlife of the wetlands

Join us to explore the insects and wildlife of the Glen Iris Wetlands this spring at this special bioblitz event along Kooyongkoot (Gardiners Creek) as part of the 2026 Great Southern Bioblitz.

Enjoy a plant and wildlife walk through the wetlands at dusk with a Council horticultural expert, followed by moth and insect spotlighting activities after dark with entomologist Dr Luis Mata.  

Attendees will be supported to take photos of insects and wildlife observed during the event using the free iNaturalist app to help document the diverse life of the wetlands.

What to bring: 

• a smartphone or camera to take photos or make sound recordings of insects/wildlife

  • download the free iNaturalist app before the event from Apple App Store or Google Play and set up your free account (watch our 2021 iNaturalist training video to learn more about using the app)

• comfortable walking shoes suitable for uneven terrain

• weather-appropriate clothing

• a torch or headlamp

Between Friday 27 and Monday 30 November, you’re invited to find, photograph and share any wild flora and fauna you observe in Stonnington using the iNaturalist app. 

Your observations during the 4 day-challenge will contribute to important citizen science data collection across the entire Southern Hemisphere to help deepen understanding of life in our urban environment.
