Nature Journaling: Looking at Oak Leaves with Maryanne Pittman — Oct 17, 2026
Description
Join us this Fall for nature journaling at the Theodore Payne Foundation for Wild Flowers and Native Plants!
For this class, we'll focus on leaves. As naturalists and nature lovers, learning to observe leaves can reveal much about a plant—from its taxonomic family to the adaptations that help it thrive in its environment. We'll start in the classroom with a short presentation and a few guided exercises, then move to the demonstration gardens to look, journal, and sketch. As part of the Oak-tober celebrations, we'll spend some time dedicated to California endemic oaks—a keystone species found nowhere else on the planet!
This class is for all experience levels!
We encourage participants to bring their own journal or sketchbook and personal drawing materials; loose paper and pencils will be provided.
Please keep in mind that a portion of this class will be held outdoors on uneven terrain, we recommend bringing layers and closed-toe, comfortable shoes.
Maryanne Pittman is the Director of Public Programs at the Theodore Payne Foundation, a Certified California Naturalist, and an experienced art and design professional. She holds degrees in Fine Art and Biology, and specializes in conservation education.

Our classes generally take place rain or shine. We do not cancel classes simply because rain is forecast; however, the safety of our students, instructors, and staff comes first. In the event of severe weather or unsafe conditions, we will evaluate the situation on a case-by-case basis and may modify, relocate, postpone, or cancel a class. If TPF cancels or postpones a class due to weather, registered participants will be notified as soon as possible and offered a refund or the option to transfer their registration to a rescheduled date when available.
