Event description

NAWIC TARANAKI, NPDC and BECA present Circular Design Framework for Sustainability on the construction site.

Join us for an interactive workshop designed to integrate sustainability into everyday jobs on the construction site. With over 20 years of engineering expertise, Colleen Thorpe will demonstrate how embedding sustainability – much like safety – should be a core requirement, not an afterthought.

In this session, Colleen will introduce the Circular Design Framework and explain how it can help redefine sustainability for your business. You’ll discover how small, thoughtful changes on every job can lead to significant, long-lasting impact. The workshop will focus on practical, real-world applications of sustainability principles in construction and provide actionable strategies for making your job site more eco-friendly.

Colleen will be joined by Dominique Scarf, Sustainability Officer from New Plymouth District Council, who will share valuable insights on local reuse and recycling systems to help reduce construction waste. Together, they will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of sustainable practices and how to incorporate them into your day-to-day work.

Session Objectives:

  • Learn the principles of a circular economy with real-world examples.

  • Understand the Circular Design Framework and how to implement it in your business.

  • Learn how to sort materials on site for reuse and recycling.

  • Explore how to leverage local infrastructure and services to reduce waste sent to landfill.

  • Work through a practical project example to apply sustainability concepts.

  • Gain the tools to ask better questions about your job site and challenge the traditional “business as usual” approach.

Whether you're a contractor, project manager, or construction worker, this workshop will equip you with the knowledge and strategies to make sustainability an integral part of your daily operations and decisions.
