Event description

NCAHA Hubs occur the last Tuesday of every second month with the purpose of supporting regional allied health professionals to network and address issues relevant to their practice.

Join us on Tue 28 June as we discuss: Allied Health and the NDIS: Some National & North Coast Perspectives

The NDIS has been a monumental development on the Australian human services landscape, presenting both enormous opportunities for people with disabilities in the community, but also profound challenges for both clients (participants) and service providers alike to get the system to work effectively and equitably as it was intended.  Today we will take a look at the national stage of NDIS developments and initiatives, with Allan Groth from SARRAH in Canberra summarising the state of play, including anticipated changes under a new Federal Government.  We will then turn to the local scene on the North Coast to see how the tyres are hitting the bitumen. Wauchope physiotherapist, Nathan Lynch, will relate his experience with NDIS from a private practice perspective, and Sarah Crook, occupational therapist from the Northern Rivers, will highlight her experience working with children and the NDIS. Together these three presenters will form a panel for further questions and debate.

Speaker Profiles

About Nathan Lynch: Nathan is a physiotherapist and principle of a multi-disciplinary Physio and Sports Rehab Centre at Wauchope on the Mid North Coast. A focus area of the practice is the rehab of chronic spinal pain, but NDIS participants are also a priority client group.  Nathan has practiced internationally before settling with his family on the Mid North Coast. He is committed to supporting professional development events for AHPs on the Mid North Coast and has represented allied health on the Primary Health Network regional Clinical Council.

About Sarah Crook: Sarah lives with her young family on a macadamia farm in the Northern Rivers region, NSW.  She is an Occupational Therapist with a Masters of Teaching in Primary Education and 18 years of experience working in the disability, health and education sectors in both Australia and the UK. Sarah is currently Northern Regional Manager for Autism Spectrum Australia’s Therapy team, supporting service delivery from the Queensland border down to the Central Coast region of NSW. She is also a Clinical Educator with the University Centre for Rural Health in Lismore. In recent years, she has had significant engagement with the NDIS in relation to children with disabilities.

About Allan Groth: Allan is Director Policy and Strategy with Services for Australian Rural and Remote Allied Health (SARRAH), the peak body representing rural and remote AHPs working in the public, private and community sectors, across health settings, disability, aged care, and other service systems.  Allan has extensive experience working on national policy in the government and non-government sectors. His focus has been on social policy including over a decade working on health workforce education, training, distribution and support with an emphasis on rural, remote and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, disability and other social support systems.
