Negotiating recovery under the NDIS

This event has passed Get tickets

Event description

This training was developed by The ACT Recovery College and MHCC ACT. It has been redeveloped for delivery to organisations by MHCC ACT.

Bringing a recovery focus when supporting service users navigate the NDIS can often be challenging. NDIS language of permanency can sometimes blur the concept of recovery as a life journey and limit one’s capacity to reimagine a better life in the community. This 2-day course provides practical knowledge and skills to support workers to understand the NDIS and how to achieve optimal outcomes for NDIS participants and other service users by applying recovery-oriented practice to the planning process. This also involves thinking outside the NDIS box and how to look towards community and what opportunities are available to support people to be part of and contribute to a welcoming healthy community of choice irrespective of mental health issues.

Content covered includes

  • Recovery in a mental health context and how to set recovery-focused goals in the context of the NDIS planning process
  • How to negotiate the deficit-based language contained in the NDIS planning process with a language of hope and aspiration consistent with recovery.
  • How NDIS supports and other informal/community supports could contribute to living a better life using the CHIME recovery model
  • Overview of the NDIS application, planning and review procedures and where to go for more information
  • Self-care and safety strategies to manage wellbeing and support recovery for both workers and service users
