Dawn Shirreffs Presents: Premiums, Property Tax and Other Natural Disasters

In hurricane country, resilience is the new granite countertop: everyone wants it, no one wants to pay for it. This talk tackles the policy paradox of how we fund flood protection and lower insurance premiums in Florida without sending property taxes into orbit. Spoiler: prayers and duct tape aren't a strategy.

Dawn is a seasoned policy wonk and Florida Director for Environmental Defense Fund. After 20+ years working on Florida's environment, climate and energy policy she always brings receipts and a sense of humor when educating policymakers that resilience costs less than rebuilding. When she’s not decoding acronyms or dodging rising tides, she’s championing smarter, saner climate policy with a raised eyebrow and a really good spreadsheet.

Amy Kelley Presents: Math AND Art? Why not? Exploring the Intersection of Mathematics and the Arts

Mathematics is often referred to as the language of science, but perhaps it is also the language of the arts. This talk breaks down the myth of “right-brain” and “left brain” thought, and highlights some of the connections between math and creativity.

Amy Kelley is an artist, mathematician, college professor, and mom who is currently working on a doctorate in Educational Leadership. She officially earned her nerd credentials as a teen, where she held roles as both clarinet first chair and only goth at her high school. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with family and friends. She loves cats, gardening, books, and good coffee.

Jennifer Joern Presents: Paw-Sitive Heroes: How Your Dog (and Maybe Even Your Cat!) Can Save Lives

Who knew your dog could be a life-saving superhero—with zero need for a cape? That’s right—dogs (and yes, even cats!) can donate blood, just like us mere humans. But unlike your cousin who faints at the sight of a needle, your pup might just be braver and more heroic than you ever imagined. Join me, a proud parent of three canine blood donors (Stanley being the latest lifesaving legend), as we dig into the world of pet blood donation. I’ll spill the kibble on what it’s like from a pet owner’s perspective—how it works, what it takes, and how your dog can be a part of this underdog (and undercat) army of heroes.

Jennifer Joern moved to St. Pete from the Great Garden State of New Jersey 12 years ago. At that time, she didn't know anything about canine blood donorship. She is known as a connector because "what good is your network if you're not connecting your network" ... more than likely she has connected people in tonight's audience. As a Jersey Girl, she still despises pumping her own gas, but considers it a fair trade-off for the 361 days of sunshine a year.
