Kenilworth – Derek & Fiona Smith
‘Kenilworth’ has been in the Smith Family since the early 1930’s where there was a dirt floor cottage closer to the road and the only garden remnant is an old apricot tree that has since been struck by lightning.
Len and Lil Smith bought the property and built a Californian Bungalow with the front door facing the south westerly winds and when you open the front door in winter, it blew a gale down the hallway – reducing the house to freezing.
Derek and Fiona Smith came to Kenilworth in 1984 and the house remained unchanged until 2009-2017. In all those previous years they planted wind breaks, gardens, hedges and sheds protecting the house from most directions. Today there is a combination of native and exotic plantings, with windbreaks running sou-east to nor-west diverting the winds away from the house and gardens.
Derek is the grounds man and Fiona is the gardener. The children have also been avid gardeners growing up and have contributed enormously to different areas around the house.
The gardens are mostly made up of different shades of greens with some flowering shrubs and flowers. There are deciduous trees lining the drive on one side and native plantings on the other. The back of the garden is full of eucalypts, wattles, callistemon, fruit trees, beehives and a long grass area for native critters. Some areas are self-seeding while others are kept neat and tidy.
We hope you enjoy our garden!
Roseville – Tony Duke
Roseville offers a unique opportunity to view an historic garden situated on the northern fringe of Guyra. A stately Georgian farm house and out buildings were built in 1887 of weatherboard and iron roofs.
The impressive grounds are extensive with well-established gardens, featuring dry stone buildings and walls, raised vegetable beds and a sunken garden bed with water features. There is a stunning rose avenue and peonies, manicured hedges, rhododendrons, tree ferns and conifers all have their moment to shine. An abundance of perennials and bulbs are planted in and around loads of trees including 92 cherry trees and other fruit trees covering four acres.
Roseville has unparalleled style, aspects, secret areas and loads of extra surprises.
Binna Burra – Julie & Kerry Gittoes
Binna Burra” was a cow paddock with only three trees when Julie and Kerry purchased the two and a half acre block in 1988. Over the decades it has been lovingly planted with a variety of beautiful deciduous and evergreen trees, hundreds of roses, rhododendrons, camellias, wisteria, azaleas, English buxus and the borders are filled with a variety of perennials and bulbs. Hence providing year round colour.
The garden has numerous structures including dry stone walls and steps, wrought iron sculptures, old farm machinery, trellises, screens, gazebos, water features, sheds made from recycled materials and pots are strategically placed around the garden to add interest and colour.
Julie has a special interest in rhododendrons, English box hedges and topiaries. She also loves old rustic collectibles that she can use in her garden.
This is certainly a must see garden. A real treasure!
Added Attractions: Morning tea and a plant stall will be available in the garden.
