Overview

Birds of Paradise Theatre Company presents three brand new works-in-progress by disabled artists, each exploring creative new approaches to embedding access.

Join us to form an audience of peers, industry and friends, providing crucial feedback for further development of the performances, as well as engaging in general creative conversations!

This is an accessible event. For further info on event and venue access please see our FAQs below.

The Evening

The evening will feature three work-in-progress pieces that run for 10-20 minutes each.

There will be accessible feedback sessions throughout where the audience will be invited to share supportive critical responses to the work, including thoughts about how the embedded access is working.

There will also be an interval and time for relaxed creative conversations with other audience members.

The three works being presented are:

In/visible - by Rachel O’Regan and Debi Pirie

Call Me Ollie - by Thomas Wood and Jamie Rea

Crip Hall - by BOP Young Artists (Theatre-Makers)

New Ground for Artists and Audience

New Ground - Access in Process is an exciting new project that has been developed in response to a lack available resources to artists for making accessible work. This project helps provide:

Time and Support

Artists are given paid time to work on creatively embedding access with a dedicated production budget. Both pair of artists receive support from the BOP team and connections to creative access specialists.

Feedback

Work-in-progress sharings are a great way for artists to get feedback on an idea early in their artistic process. Artists are able to identify key areas they need feedback on, and audiences get the chance to engage critically with work and open creative conversations with other artists.

Community

Work-in-progress events are also a wonderful opportunity to chat to new creatives and get to know other people around Scotland interested in creating disabled-led, accessible theatre.

  • Is the venue accessible?

Yes! The venue has step-free access, two accessible toilets within the building and automatic internal doors. See The Boardwalk Accessibility Guide for extensive details.

  • How long is the event?

Doors are at 7pm with the event starting at 7:30pm.

The event will last approximately 2 hours.

  • How will audience feedback be collected?

During this event the BOP team will be exploring new, accessible ways of collecting audience responses that does not rely only on traditional handwritten feedback.

    Accessible practices will include:

    • feedback collected in relaxed environments, including 1-2-1 and in spaces away from the main event

    • Written, typed, SLI and verbal feedback supported

    • Opportunity to provide thoughts both during the event and in the following days

    • Clear prompts and feedback questions from the artists

    • Feedback facilitated by BOP staff

  • What is Creatively Embedded Access?

Creatively Embedded Access is the practice of weaving access support such as captions, sign language interpretation, audio description and relaxed principles into the performance itself. The access becomes part of the art and it starts at the very beginning of the artistic process.

  • How has New Ground come about?

Recognising the lack of funding as a key barrier artists approach us with when wanting to make accessible work, this year we have launched New Ground to provide two pairs of disabled artists with time, budget and support to create new work.

You can find out all about the journey of New Ground on our website.
