At Central Craft, a studio induction is a welcoming introduction to our shared creative space and how we work together here.

It is a chance for new members to get comfortable in the studio, meet staff, and understand how to safely and confidently use the facilities. We walk through key safety information, equipment use, and care of the shared space, along with simple routines like cleaning up, storing work, and looking after tools.

We also cover how the studio operates day to day, including access, bookings, and general expectations that help keep the environment respectful, supportive, and easy for everyone to create in.

Central Craft is a member-run, not-for-profit organisation based in Mparntwe (Alice Springs), within the Araluen Cultural Precinct on Arrernte Country. We acknowledge and respect the cultural and spiritual significance of this site, which sits among sacred landmarks including Yaye (Big Sister Hill), Yaye Akweke (Little Sister Hill), and a 300-year-old corkwood tree — part of the Two Sisters Dreaming.

We exist because of the dedication of our members — those who founded Central Craft, helped it grow, and continue to nurture it today.

For 50 years, Central Craft has been Central Australia’s hub for traditional and contemporary craft. Our purpose-built studio, gallery, and retail shop support over 200 members and 13 member organisations.

As the only technical support base for craft within 1,500 km, we offer specialised equipment and facilities for ceramics, textiles, eco-dyeing, jewellery, printmaking, weaving, glass, and more. Our programs welcome makers of all skill levels and backgrounds.

We host workshops, community craft groups, residencies, and the nationally recognised Alice Craft Acquisition (ACA) exhibition — all designed to foster creativity, connection, and skill-sharing.

At its heart, Central Craft is powered by its members — a creative, generous community keeping the spirit of making alive in the heart of the desert.
