Event description

Dynamic kiwi pianist Liam Wooding will collaborate with staff and students from UC to perform new music from Australasia and beyond.

Opening the concert is Jenny McLeod’s ‘Mirror Echoes’, written in 2022. It was the last piece the composer wrote and is a short work for 1 or 2 pianists that was convinced as a pedagogical exercise for the collection: Fit 4 Piano etudes. David Hamilton’s new piece Ururangi draws inspiration from the Matariki constellation and Shingetsu by Australian composer Lachlan Skipworth flows and dances.

Liam then teams up with UC percussionist Sho Woodhouse in John Psathas’ electric ‘Angelus’ before returning to David Hamilton in ‘Tui’, which he will play alongside a team of UC piano students.

The performance concludes with Jacob TV’s iconically ironic ‘Body of Your Dreams.’ Be wowed by the latest fitness craze in this piece for piano and digital media!

Liam Wooding is renowned for his “chameleon-like ability with keyboard colour” (Radio New Zealand). After completing his piano studies at the Australian National Academy of Music and furthering his education in the United States as a Fulbright Scholar, Liam now performs solo recitals and chamber music across Australasia and beyond. Liam has garnered awards and commendation for his work from Creative New Zealand, University of Waikato and the Australian National Academy of Music.

Liam has collaborated with distinguished artists such as percussionist Steven Schick, soprano Stephanie Acraman, violinist Akiko Miazawa, and his own chamber ensemble, Morton Trio. Albums featuring Acraman (The Complete Cabaret Songs of William Bolcom) and Morton Trio have garnered attention from leading outlets, including Limelight Magazine, Seesaw Magazine, and MusicWeb International.
