    Event description

    New North Concert 15

~ Xiaole Zhan [recipient of the New North Emerging Artist Commission] ~

Xiaole will present a 'live anthology' for percussion, violin, electronics and narrator—a musical setting of a collection of poems exploring the collision between music and language.

Xiaole Zhan (they/them) is a Chinese-New Zealand writer and composer based in Naarm. Their compositions have been debuted internationally by the Vancouver Chamber Choir in Canada and in London as the winner of the Commonwealth International Composition Award and they were the 2024 Buxton Contemporary Composer in Residence. As a writer, Zhan is the recipient of the 2024 Kat Muscat Fellowship and a 2024 Wheeler Centre Hot Desk Fellowship.

    ~ Jassy Robertson ~

Jassy's New North performance will include quadraphonic performance on analogue synthesizers and live projections, bringing together recent developments in her performance practice, drawn from her PhD research at Monash University, in which she is composing an opera that queers concepts and methods of censoring.

Jassy is an interdisciplinary composer, improviser and artistic researcher. Driven by experimentation and collaboration, she often works with video, spatialised audio and erotic forms of notation to realise multisensory works. Jaslyn’s music has been performed in festivals across Australia, Germany and Canada.

    ~ Tilman Robinson ~

In a New North premiere, Tilman will perform a new dark-ambient electronic solo work using source material reflective of his dormant jazz arranging career and a childhood love of Barbra Streisand.

Tilman creates maximalist electro-acoustic and dark ambient music drawing on a wide range of genres. Tilman’s diverse output focuses on the psychological impact of dense sound incorporating acousmatics and psychoacoustic principles. Tilman has received major work commissions from genre diverse sources and accolades including nominations for the Melbourne Prize in 2016 & 2019.
