Description

As technology continues to pervade all aspects of life, its legal implications continue to grow. Technology also brings new opportunities and problems for social justice issues such as access to justice, data sovereignty and protest. Listen to our experts in technology law from the UTS Faculty of Law Technology and IP Cluster explain their latest research and its social justice implications while our panel of UTS Law Students asks them questions about their cutting edge work.

With speakers including Professor Natalie Stoianoff, Associate Professor Sacha Molitorisz, Associate Professor Evana Wright, Dr Michael Davis, Maryam Khajeh Tabari, Dr Susanne Lloyd-Jones, Associate Professor Genevieve Wilkinson, Dr Jane Hogan, Associate Professor George Tian, Dr Sarah Hook, Professor Philip Chung and Professor Andrew Mowbray you will hear snapshots of their recent technology research and its important implications for social justice in diverse areas of law.

This year’s New Research in Tech, Law and Social Justice showcase highlights innovative research being undertaken at UTS Law at the intersection of technology, law, human rights and social change. Presentations will explore how law can support more equitable and democratic digital futures, including research on empowering young environmental advocates to use intellectual property and freedom of expression rights in climate campaigning; the Australian News Complaints Tracker, a new public resource designed to improve media accountability and support public interest journalism; Indigenous Data Sovereignty and Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property rights in the GLAM sector; gender disparities in patent inventorship; and the future of free access to law through AustLII’s development of AI-enhanced legal research tools.

The event will also showcase emerging scholarship examining some of the most pressing challenges posed by artificial intelligence and digital technologies. Topics include the use and regulation of AI to improve access to justice for people with unmet legal needs; governance frameworks for trustworthy AI, blockchain technologies and sustainable supply chains; the impact of AI on news media and democratic participation; legal responses to deepfakes, privacy harms and technology-facilitated gender violence; and the protection of Traditional Knowledge and Traditional Cultural Expressions through digital databases. Listen to our researchers reflect on the role of their research in advancing social justice in diverse ways, including promoting transparency, inclusion, environmental sustainability, cultural respect, public trust and meaningful access to information, legal services and democratic participation.
