Event description

NEWRETRO

21 works / 21 dancers / 21 years in the making

NEWRETRO is an epic new performance installation by leading Australian choreographer Lucy Guerin, celebrating Melbourne’s award-winning dance company Lucy Guerin Inc (LGI).

A large-scale assemblage of ideas, structures, and excerpts of Guerin’s choreography from LGI’s past productions is reconfigured to create a new long-form work inhabiting the iconic galleries at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA).

Involving many of Melbourne’s most exceptional dancers, some who are original cast members and some who are new to the work, it addresses memory, ephemeral lineages and the dancer’s embodied knowledge. The ACCA galleries will frame the performers in a singular relationship to architecture and the spectator, to create an immersive experience both intimate and spectacular.

While reflective in its concept, NEWRETRO defies description as a retrospective, bringing past ideas and different generations into a new relationship to the present moment.

Lucy Guerin is one of Australia’s foremost choreographers and NEWRETRO is an exhilarating celebration of the dancers, the artform and a significant body of work.

"A singularly joyous experience, a celebration of the innate subversiveness of the human body."
– Alison Croggon on ‘Corridor’

Please note: audience members are free to roam and may come and go during the performance.
