Event description

Small Giants Academy presents this rare opportunity to join Kate Raworth and Roman Krznaric as your Masterclass instructors.

Kate Raworth is a renegade, maverick, rock-star economist, and author of the global bestseller Doughnut Economics. Roman Krznaric is a public philosopher and author of bestsellers like Empathy, The Wonderbox and Carpe Diem Regained. His new book is The Good Ancestor: How to Think Long Term in a Short-Term World.

In this unique masterclass Kate will present the Doughnut Economics model, and discuss the power that lies in redrawing the pictures that shape the way we see and interpret the world. To get into the Doughnut we must transform the underlying dynamics of our economies – turning degenerative industrial systems into regenerative ones, and divisive economies into distributive ones. She will share examples of how the Doughnut is being put into practice in business and in cities alike, with the challenges that arise in the process. Ultimately, these transformations depend upon transforming the very design of our organisations – be they businesses, NGOs or community groups – and Kate will invite us to dive into what that means for our own organisations and their role in the Next Economy.

Roman will explore how we can overcome the frenetic short-termism of the modern world, which hampers our capacity to create the Next Economy. Politicians can barely see past the next election or businesses past the next quarterly report, and we are addicted to the latest tweet and the ‘buy now’ button. Drawing on everything from the seventh-generation thinking of indigenous peoples and politically empowered ‘guardians of the future’ to the latest neuroscience research, he shows how we can extend our time horizons and become ‘cathedral thinkers’. Along the way he will be introducing experiential learning activities and discussions to expand the long-term imagination.

Kate and Roman will fuse their work on Doughnut Economics and becoming a Good Ancestor into powerful workshop exercises where we explore how future generations would want us to act today to create the Next Economy that they will inherit.

This masterclass will be intimate, participatory and engaging. Whilst no preparation is formally required, we highly encourage you to read Doughnut Economics in advance of attending.

Places are strictly limited so we apologies in advance for disappointment.
