NEXT50 Lunch: A National Approach to Improving Behaviour in Australian Classrooms
Description
Join us at The Centre for Independent Studies for a lunch with Julian Leeser MP, Shadow Minister for Education and Shadow Minister for Indigenous Australians, as he outlines the federal Coalition's approach to improving student behaviour in Australian schools.
The Coalition has recently committed to supporting every Australian school to establish clear behavioural expectations for students. In this speech, Mr Leeser will discuss the role of the federal government in improving classroom behaviour, supporting teachers and school leaders, and strengthening approaches to student behaviour across Australian schools.
Recent evidence highlights the extent of the problem. The latest PISA results show Australian classrooms remain among the most disorderly in the developed world, while AITSL data show the proportion of teachers intending to leave the profession who cite student behaviour as a reason has risen from 25% in 2020 to 47% in 2024. And a recent report by CIS Director of Education Research, Blaise Joseph, found that teachers estimate an average of nine minutes of every 30 minutes of teaching time is lost to student misbehaviour, almost one-third of learning time.
Julian Leeser has served as the Federal Member for Berowra since 2016. Before entering Parliament, he held senior roles at Australian Catholic University and the Menzies Research Centre, practised as a lawyer, and served as an associate to High Court Justice Ian Callinan. He has also served on the board of Teach For Australia.
