Ngā Tipu ā Nuku - Harvest Festival
Event description
Nau mai, haere mai ki Ngā Tipu ā Nuku! You’re invited to come together for this year's Harvest Festival!
Ngā Tipu ā Nuku Harvest Festival is a one-day community event celebrating the abundant harvest of ngahuru [autumn], reconnecting as a community after a full raumati [summer], and preparing for the cooler months ahead. This is a small community-led festival, hosted by the Learning Environment and Healthy Families WRR - in collaboration with a number of community contributors (watch this space).
Held at Pīwaiwaka Farm in Papaiti, the Harvest Festival will involve opportunities to connect with the land through the harvest of apples, kūmara and other seasonal crops (if they are ready) - as well as a number of practical kai-oriented workshops, hauora offerings, and music from a few local Whanganui artists.
There is a whānau/kids space with activities throughout the day, so please feel free to bring the whole whānau - just make sure to book tickets for the kids too (free) so we know how many people are coming.
Lunch and afternoon tea are provided - but it’s worth bringing some extra kai with you if the whole family is coming.
—--------------------------
The name Ngā Tipu ā Nuku is a play on words that first speaks to the growing shoots (ngā tipu), the kai provided by Papatūānuku - reflecting the abundance of this time, and the ancestral traditions of harvesting, celebrating and reflecting while preparing to save and share kai for the winter ahead.
The name also plays on the name of the star Tupuānuku, one of the whānau members in the Matariki constellation who is associated with kai grown in the earth. This speaks to the rising of Matariki and Puanga as we move towards the end of the Māori new year - a time of sharing kai together, reflecting on the past, and stocking up the pātaka [storehouse] for the months ahead and spring cultivations.
Ngā Tipu ā Nuku Harvest Festival is intended to become an annual community-led event that grows in the years to come as an opportunity for our community to come together to honour, celebrate, reflect and look ahead.
