Nick Gaffaney
Event description
Nick Gaffaney returns home for a special concert with Christchurch’s finest jazz talents, featuring Jimmy Rainey, Nick Pitts, and Dougal Canard.
Born in Christchurch, Nick Gaffaney attended the relatively early days of Ara Music Arts back when it occupied the magnificent (but leaky and drafty) St Asaph Street building in the mid 1990's. Some of his fondest memories are of cycling home through the late night Christchurch smog following a day's practice at what was affectionately known as "tech" by students of Nick's vintage.
Since leaving Christchurch in 1998, Nick has travelled a wide and varied path through his career, making music all over the world in situations as diverse as free jazz and noise music in Canada. Broken beat, electronic dance music in Auckland and London. As an Artist in Residence at the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts in Ahmedabad, India. As one of the most in-demand session and touring drummers in New Zealand with Anika Moa, Fat Freddy's Drop, Goldenhorse, Dimmer, Hollie Smith, Mark de Clive-Lowe, Ben Lee, (and many more) and as a singer/drummer/keyboard bass player in his boundary-pushing rock project Cairo Knife Fight.
With Cairo Knife Fight, Nick has released half a dozen EP's and two albums, been nominated for three New Zealand music awards and the Taite Music Prize, had songs in the Billboard Top 40 Rock Singles Chart in the United States, and toured internationally and locally as a headliner and as support for artists such as Karnivool, Them Crooked Vultures, Foo Fighters, Queens of The Stone Age, and Gomez.
Additionally, Nick was the recipient for the 2013 Apra Professional Development Award with allowed him to travel to the USA to write with legendary songwriter and Singer Mark Lanagen (Screaming Tress, Queens of The Stone Age). This experience is one Nick has singled out as a driver of his decision to relocate to Los Angeles, where he has lived since 2014.
Currently, Nick is in the process of releasing the two albums worth of material CKF recorded at Dave Grohl's Studio 606 in Los Angeles, some of which features drumming legend Dave Lombardo (Slayer, Mr Bungle, Misfits) in a double-drum collaboration, and working in his studio on new music loosely based in the LA jazz and jazz adjacent music scene.
