Nikki Gemmell is the bestselling author of 14 fiction novels, 7 non-fiction books, and 2 series for children aged 9-13 years. Known as Australia’s most honest author, whether it’s her provocative novel The Bride Stripped Bare, or After, her non fiction book about the euthanasia death of her mother, she gets the nation thinking. Her works have been translated into 22 languages, and her distinctive writing has gained her critical acclaim in France, where she’s been described as a “female Jack Kerouac“. The French literary magazine Lire has included her in a list of what it called the fifty most important writers in the world; those it believes will have a significant influence on the literature of the 21st century.
Her best-known work is the 2003 novel, The Bride Stripped Bare, an explicit exploration of female sexuality, which was originally written and published anonymously. The book went on to become a worldwide publishing sensation, and was the best-selling book by an Australian author in 2003. In 2022, The Bride Stripped Bare, was named as one of the 25 best Australian novels of the past 25 years.
Nikki has been an actress, waitress and shop assistant, and radio broadcaster for the ABC, Triple J, and BBC. She is also passionate about encouraging kids to write.
