Event description

Abstract:

When is the right time to start toilet training? Many families and professionals are told to wait for specific “readiness signs” like staying dry for two hours or showing interest in the toilet. However, there’s little evidence that these signs predict success, especially for children with developmental disabilities. In fact, waiting too long can delay essential learning and independence.

This presentation will challenge common myths around toilet training readiness, showing why readiness is not a checklist. Instead, we’ll explore how to proactively develop individualised plans for learners of all ages and abilities, including children, primary schoolers and teens. I’ll share evidence-backed strategies that prioritise independence, dignity, and safety, while offering practical tools for creating opportunities rather than waiting for them.

By shifting our perspective from “is this child ready?” to “how can we help them be as independent as possible”, we can support every learner’s journey toward greater bathroom independence.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this presentation, attendees will be able to:

1. Explain why toilet training is essential for promoting independence, dignity, and safety.

2. Describe typical toilet training milestones and timelines, and how they apply to diverse learners.

3.  Identify and challenge common myths and misconceptions about readiness skills and the “best time” to begin toilet training.
